Tapio Wirkkala
Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) is widely recognized as a pioneering Finnish designer. His major breakthrough occurred in 1946 when he won a design competition organized by Iittala, which garnered him international acclaim and established a lasting connection with the Finnish glass industry. Over his career at Iittala, Wirkkala designed more than 400 pieces, including the iconic Ultima Thule and Gaissa glassware collections. Wirkkala had a profound connection with nature, and his favourite retreat was the deep forests of Finland. The stunning natural scenery inspired much of his work, which often features organic forms and recurring themes such as leaves, birds, ice, and water.
