George Carwardine
George Carwardine (1887-1947) was an engineer renowned for his work on vehicle suspension systems. In 1924, he established Cardine Accessories to explore spring and lever mechanisms, leading to the creation of the Anglepoise® lamp. By 1932, he launched a groundbreaking 4-spring lamp with a patented constant spring mechanism, which offered exceptional movement and balance. Due to high demand, he licensed the design to Herbert Terry & Sons in 1934, resulting in the mass-produced 4-spring Model 1208™. In 1935, Carwardine and Terry’s team adapted this for home use, creating the Original 1227™, still produced today.
