Alexander Girard
Alexander Girard (1907–1993) was pivotal in postwar American design, leaving an indelible mark on 20th-century visual culture. Girard worked in architecture, furniture, interior design, graphic design, and exhibition design; however, his primary focus was textile design. As the founding director of Herman Miller's textile division, he generated more than 300 patterns, favouring abstract forms and geometric patterns in various colour compositions. Girard was an avid collector of international folk art and toys, from which he often drew inspiration.
