Ruth Jones

16/10/06 - 10:00 a.m.

As with most of our favourite objects (design or otherwise), no matter the materials, the fundamental processes in which they are fabricated have been optimally refined for decades if not centuries. We invite you to explore with us the romantic and hypnotic practice of tapestry creation. On October 20th, we will have a living display in our front window. Ruth Jones, an accomplished tapestry artist who works in the Aubusson tradition and has recently received a commission from Stirling Castle, will be conducting a weaving demonstration on her loom. There will also be a presentation from 5 to 7pm. As a weaver she feels she has a commonality with all weavers of all nations, especially those of the Northwest Coast, who, she says, "look at me as someone who is practicing a craft that is part of their tradition as well." She weaves images that are sometimes political, sometimes spiritual, sometimes both, but always supreme examples of her technical virtuosity. One such tapestry is on permanent display at the Museum of Anthropology.
